Make sure you reach out to someone today and do whatever it takes to make sure they know about the events and services taking place in our church and community. There are people in McCamey who don't have a church home, don't realize what a relationship with Christ can be for them, and are missing out on some fantastic fellowship with our members.
Share your faith - everything you do is evangelism.

Anniversary of the death of Charles Wesley
Charles Wesley died on March 29, 1788 in Marylebone, London, England. His final hymn was dictated to his wife. On his deathbed, he wrote:
In age and feebleness extreme,
Who shall a helpless worm redeem?
Jesus, my only hope Thou art,
Strength of my failing flesh and heart,:
O, could I catch a smile from Thee
And drop into eternity!
He was buried in the Marylebone Parish Church, London, an Anglican church. He did not wish to be buried in unconsecrated, Methodist ground. His gravestone reads:

Prayer for the Fifth Sunday in Lent
The Gospel According to John, chapter 12 Durham Gospel, late 7th century |
As we begin this final time before Holy Week, dear Lord, help us to use it to reflect more fully on the sacrifice you made for us as you made your way to the cross. Forgive our undisciplined life, our indifferent witness and our yielding to fear. Transform us this day by your grace and your love. Amen.

Where are the young?
Author and blogger Rachel Held Evans posted the following on her blog today. What do you
think?+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Eight million twenty-somethings have left the church, and it seems like everyone is trying to figure out why.
Last week, Christian Piatt offered seven reasons here, and four more reasons here. David Kinnaman recently authored a book entitled, You Lost Me, which details the findings of Barna researchers who interviewed hundreds of 18-29 year-olds about why they left the church.
I left the church when I was twenty-seven. I am now thirty, and after trying unsuccessfully to start a house church, my husband and I are struggling to find a faith community in which we feel we belong. I’ve been reluctant to write about this search in the past, but it seems like such a common experience, I think it’s time to open up, especially now that I’ve had some time to process. But let’s begin with fifteen reasons why I left:
1. I left the church because I’m better at planning Bible studies than baby showers...but they only wanted me to plan baby showers.
2. I left the church because when we talked about sin, we mostly talked about sex.
3. I left the church because my questions were seen as liabilities.
4. I left the church because sometimes it felt like a cult, or a country club, and I wasn’t sure which was worse.
5. I left the church because I believe the earth is 4.5 billion years old and that humans share a common ancestor with apes, which I was told was incompatible with my faith.
6. I left the church because sometimes I doubt, and church can be the worst place to doubt.
7. I left the church because I didn’t want to be anyone’s “project.”
8. I left the church because it was often assumed that everyone in the congregation voted for Republicans.
9. I left the church because I felt like I was the only one troubled by stories of violence and misogyny and genocide found in the Bible, and I was tired of people telling me not to worry about it because “God’s ways are higher than our ways.”
10. I left the church because of my own selfishness and pride.
11. I left the church because I knew I would never see a woman behind the pulpit, at least not in the congregation in which I grew up.
12. I left the church because I wanted to help people in my community without feeling pressure to convert them to Christianity.
13. I left the church because I had learned more from Oprah about addressing poverty and injustice than I had learned from 25 years of Sunday school.
14. I left the church because there are days when I’m not sure I believe in God, and no one told me that “dark nights of the soul” can be part of the faith experience.
15. I left the church because one day, they put signs out in the church lawn that said “Marriage = 1 Man + 1 Woman: Vote Yes on Prop 1,” and I knew the moment I saw them that I never wanted to come back.
“I am convinced that what drives most people away from Christianity is not the cost of discipleship but rather the cost of false fundamentals.” – Evolving in Monkey Town, p. 207
“We aren’t looking for a faith that provides all the answers; we’re looking for one in which we are free to ask the questions.” – Evolving in Monkey Town, p. 204
In the weeks to come, I'll be sharing more about why I stayed with the Church--with a capital-C-- and about our search for a local faith community.
Why did you leave the church?
Why do you stay?

A Prayer in Spring
Today is the first day of spring - enjoy!
A Prayer in Spring
A Prayer in Spring
Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.
And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.
For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;

Next Sunday's Scripture Lesson
The scripture lesson for the 5th Sunday in Lent (March 25) comes from John 12:20-33.
"Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal."
(John 12:24-25, The Message)

A Nicodemus Moment
|
A Nicodemus Moment (John 3:14-21)
She sat in a darkened sanctuary
expecting little
yet hoping for much.
She sat in a darkened sanctuary
alone …
and then Light walked in,
uninvited and unannounced,
whispering, “For God so loves you….”
Her heart beat faster
as she heard that
God had loved her in her ‘befores’ …
… before she asked for this Love,
… before she admitted to
needing this Love,
… before she sought to
understand such a Love,
… before she realized that she
wanted this Gift of Love.

Saint Patrick's Day Collect
St. Patrick's Cathedral - Dublin, Ireland |
Saint Patrick's Day Collect
Almighty God,
who in Your providence chose Your servant Patrick
to be the apostle of the Irish people,
to bring those who were wandering in darkness and error
to the true light and knowledge of You:
Grant us so to walk in that light,
that we may come at last to the light of everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and ever.
Amen.

A letter from our bishop
The following letter was received by our church from our bishop:
March 1, 2012
My dear friends in Christ and colleagues in ministry:
This letter is to express to you my sincere gratitude for the amazing work you are doing for Christ and the church. In the San Antonio Episcopal Area, we are right at the tipping point of moving from slow, but steady decline, to slow, but sustained growth in our common mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The number of vital congregations in this Area is substantial and growing.
I specifically want to thank you for your wonderful witness of faith in your commitment to the opportunity for Connectional giving. Your 100 percent payment of apportionments is a testimony to your understanding of the significance of your place in the larger church. I know this commitment often involves great effort and sacrifice. I also know our Lord has given 100 percent of himself to us and we have the great joy of giving to others, as individuals and congregations.
As you review the ministry of your church in 2011, please celebrate the full payment of apportionments as a great achievement and faithful offering. Please look to 2012 as another opportunity to move forward in advancing the cause of Christ in your community and beyond. Our ministry is never-ending.
Thanks again for your faithfulness! The journey continues. God bless you.
Sincerely,
James E. Dorff

UMW tonight
The UMW met tonight at the church with ten in attendance. Devotional readings were provided by Peggy Garner and Jean Myrick. Cytha Peters spoke about this month's prayer focus, The Women's Opportunity Fund.
Tonight's program was provided by Jennifer Aguilar about the work being done by the National Missions Institution which is supported by the UMW units around the country. One setting is in our area, the Alpine Community Center, which is doing some exciting work in west Texas. We also learned that the pastor in Alpine, the Rev. Jane (Golden) Vaughan is a McCamey High School alumnae.
Following the program, Louise Carll provided the refreshments, a home-made pecan pie. It was delicious!
Scripture lesson for March 18th
Our lesson for the Fourth Sunday in Lent is John 3:14-21. This passage contains what is argueably the most famous verse in all of the Bible, John 3:16:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
The question to ponder this week as you make your way on the pilgrimage path, is just what does this passage mean to you and to those you encounter on The Way.
