A prayer on Pentecost Sunday
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Breathe in me O Holy Spirit
that my thoughts may all be holy;
Act in me O Holy Spirit
that my works, too, may be holy;
Draw my heart O Holy Spirit
that I love but what is holy;
Strengthen me O Holy Spirit
to defend that is holy;
Guard me then O Holy Spirit
that I always may be holy.

Do I like being old?
This poem was shared by Theodora Matthews last Friday at the United Methodist on the Town supper outing here in McCamey:
Do I
Like Being Old???
As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less
critical of myself. I’ve become my own
best friend.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon;
before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the
computer until 4 AM or sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60s & 70s,
and if I, at the same time wish to weep over a lost love, I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over
a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to,
despite the pitying glances from the jet set.
They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well
forgotten. And I will eventually
remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a
loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet gets
hit by a car? But broken hearts are what
gives us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile
and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair
turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep
grooves on my face. So many have never
laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I
am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or
worrying about what will be. And I shall
eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

Pentecost Sunday text
While the secular world will think next weekend celebrates the Memorial Day holiday, the weekend which is the 'unofficial' start to summer, we in the church know that next Sunday (May 27th) is Pentecost Sunday - the "birthday" of the church. Our sermon scripture lesson will come from Ezekiel 37:1-14.
In recognition of this significant day in the life of our faith, please wear something red.
Please invite someone to celebrate with us - God is going to do some amazing 'stuff' in McCamey, you won't want to miss it!

Prayer for Ascension Day
Ascension Window - Elim Lutheran Church - Fargo, ND |
O God, whose blessed Son,
our great high priest,
has entered once for all into the Holy Place
and ever liveth to intercede on our behalf:
grant that we,
sanctified by the offering of his body
may draw near with full assurance of faith
by the way which he has dedicated for us
and evermore serve thee, the living God;
through the same thy Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who liveth and reigneth with thee,
O Father, and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end. Amen.

Hymn for Mother's Day
Faith of Our Mothers
Faith of our mothers, living still
In cradle song and bedtime prayer;
In nursery lore and fireside love,
Thy presence still pervades the air:
Faith of our mothers, living faith!
We will be true to thee to death.
Faith of our mothers, loving faith,
Fount of our childhood's trust and grace,
Oh, may thy consercration prove
Source of a finer, nobler race:
Faith of our mothers, living faith,
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
For youthful longing, youthful doubt,
How blurred our vision, blind our way,
Thy providential care without:
Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our mothers, Christian faith,
Is truth beyond our stumbling creeds,
Still serve the home and save the Church,
And breathe thy spirit through our deeds:
Faith of our mothers, Christian faith!
We will be true to thee till death
Faith of our mothers, living still
In cradle song and bedtime prayer;
In nursery lore and fireside love,
Thy presence still pervades the air:
Faith of our mothers, living faith!
We will be true to thee to death.

Mother's Day is coming!
Mother's Day is right around the corner! Sunday, May 13th is a great opportunity to bring a mother to worship with you. Don't let this occasion go by without sharing your church family with someones mom!
We will also be enjoying a celebration lunch provided by the family of Ashor Brown (who is being baptised on Sunday). With McCamey restaurants being closed on Sunday, this is a real treat!
Don't know any mom's who need a church family? Then bring a daughter - they have mom's too!

The scripture for May 13
Peter Baptising the Centurion, Cornelius by Francesco Trevisani, 1709 |
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God.
Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.
